Tackling Anxiety on Your Study Abroad Adventure

Essential Tips for International Students Coping with Anxiety

Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity that promises personal growth, cultural immersion, and academic advancement. However, along with these experiences, international students often face the challenge of managing anxiety, which can be attributed to the unfamiliar environment, academic pressures, and distance from their support systems back home. In the blog, I’ll explore effective strategies and tips to help international students manage anxiety and make the most of their time abroad.

1. Cultivate a Supportive Network

Building a network of friends, classmates, and local acquaintances can significantly alleviate feelings of isolation as well as help you feel comfortable in the new environment. Attend orientation events, join clubs or student organizations, and participate in social activities to meet like-minded individuals who share your interests. The University of Ottawa hosts plenty of events during the “Welcome Week” in the Fall, so make sure to attend and make new friends.

2. Practice Self-Care

Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. Engage in regular exercise, maintain a balanced diet, and get plenty of good night’s sleep so that you have the energy to accomplish all your daily tasks and goals. It would also contribute to a stable mood and reduced anxiety. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's reading, painting, or exploring your host city, to relax and unwind.

Pro Tip: Practice meditation, deep breathing, or yoga exercises to manage stress and anxiety. These techniques can help you stay grounded and focused, even during challenging times.

3. Time Management

Create a structured routine that includes time for studying, socializing, and relaxation. It could be challenging to maintain a balance between part-time jobs, studying, finding an internship, engaging in extracurricular activities and the list goes on. The only effective way to manage all of this is efficient time management on your part which can help prevent last-minute stress and provide a sense of control over your responsibilities.

Pro Tip: Maintain a to-do list for each day and keep track of all the on-going and pending tasks. Strike off as you complete them. This way you can actually see your daily progress of accomplisments which in turn makes you feel less overwhelmed.

4. Seek Professional Help

If anxiety becomes overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek help from your university's counselling services or local mental health professionals. They can provide guidance, coping strategies, and a safe space to discuss your concerns. Counselling is a confidential service for students who are facing life challenges. It is a safe space to explore new perspectives and build resilience.

5. Set Realistic Goals

Set achievable academic and personal goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, to boost your confidence. Each minor accomplishment contributes to your overall progress. Always remember that you’re not supposed to be good at everything or be successful all the time. Learn to accept failures and consider them as stepping stones to your journey of growth and prosperity.

6. Embrace Cultural Differences

Cultural adjustments can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Educate yourself about the local customs and practices to better understand and appreciate the culture you're immersed in. Remember that it's okay to experience moments of discomfort as you adapt. Eventbrite and Meetup are some of the popular websites where you can find all sorts of social events taking place in your city.

7. Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Maintain regular communication with your family and friends back home through video and audio calls. I can’t stress enough how much it helps in coping with anxiety and stress. You may think that sharing your difficult days or stressful situations would make your family overly worried but you may be surprised to know that oftentimes your family may share advice and emotional support that you would not have even expected. Their support and familiarity can provide a sense of comfort during moments of homesickness.

8. Embrace Flexibility and Reflect

Remember that adapting to a new environment takes time. Embrace uncertainty and setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. Approach challenges with a flexible mindset, and don't be too hard on yourself. Maintain a journal to document your experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Writing can be therapeutic and provide valuable insights into your emotional journey.

Personal Advice: Develop a habit of setting boundaries by learning to say NO when necessary. Trust me, it prevents burnout and reduce anxiety. You don’t need to satisfy every request, demand or commitment if it doesn’t align with your priorities.
